As those who
know me are aware of I happen to LOVE Halloween and October 30th happens to be
Sharon's birthday both of which calls for celebration!! To ring in the
festivities we encouraged the kids to dress up on the Friday for school
(something that never used to be heard of here but is becoming better known
now). I had long before prepared my costume as a storm cloud so I was ready and
waiting to kick off the day. I was happily surprised that the kids too
were in costume and ready to share my enthusiasm for such a fun day! While the
morning kept with our regular class schedule we then cancelled the kids usual
Khmer class in the afternoon in order to set up stations within all of the
classrooms so that the kids could rotate through the activities and receive
some mandatory Halloween treats. Having seen this strategy used at my practicum
school I was definitely excited to put it into play myself. And having learnt
from the best I carried over my practicum teachers idea of having a cake walk
(which people here have never heard of!) the kids loved it and we all had fun
putting it on!
The
following night for actual Halloween I of course did a costume change, I would
expect nothing less from true Halloween lovers, and I transformed into a
strawberry (or a passable tomato which ever you prefer!). This night was pretty
casual just enjoying everyone's company at Sharon's house to also celebrate her
birthday. We are not the rowdiest of groups but we sure know how to eat as
Sharon outdid herself on her own birthday and made everyone dinner of curry!
