A mere four
days after returning from Thailand we were off again but this time we had
accumulated another travel companion, Sarah. The four of us set off for Kuala
Lumpur, in Malaysia. KL has a large Muslim culture which restricts a lot
of drinking so when we landed we thought it would be a good idea to stop off at
duty free to get a forty of Bacardi and a forty of Malibu, for reasons I cannot
remember. Now sharon codi and myself are not big drinkers as you may have
read we did all of zero heavy drinking in Thailand and managed to always be in
bed by 10pm so this was a new twist of events. Once we arrived at the hostel we
poured our drinks into water bottles (had to be discreet) and hit the streets
for some food. Being late and jet lagged we chose a not so spectacular place to
eat which events to come were a result of.... Anyway I did not eat the food I
ordered to say the least but others stormed on and ate their questionable
meals. Back in the room while sharon and I called it quits on drinking
Sarah powered on like a champ and eniillate most of the bottle of Bacardi. All
was fine as I excused myself and went to bed. An hour or so later Sarah enter
the room quietly and she too fell asleep.... Only to awake soon later in which
a sequence of events soon ensued. First we were at a cheap hostel therefore
toilets were not in the bedrooms and required you to take two steps down the
hall and turn left. I also should mention the bathroom doors slide quietly shut
and therefore should not be heard. So Sarah wakes up looking to the toilet this
our conversation...
Sarah:
(rummaging around)
Me: Sarah
what are you doing?
Sarah:
iiiiimmmm hust looking for the toileeeeet
Me: they are
outside
Sarah: no no
I will hind it in here (by the way I'm spelling as though she was pronouncing
with a slight slur)
Me: you need
to go out side
Sarah: ok ok
A minute
later I hear a door open and shut. (Remember the bathroom doors slide)
AND THEN
death defying screams!!!!
Yup that's
not the toilet that's the neighbours room!
The next day
while I met sharon in the lobby for breakfast and to share the past evenings
events I also learnt that Codi was very ill with food poisoning from last
nights questionable food choices.
So with Sarah still out
cold from her escapades last night and Codi I'll it was just Sharon and I who
hit the shops. Now Kuala Lumpur is a step up as they actually have malls so we
were in shopping heaven and ended up buying three pairs of pants, a sweater,
and two work shirts! Sharon also spent quite a bit and later we were banned
from shopping together by Codi (Sharon's girlfriend) who had wanted her to
stick to a budget but that clearly went out the door when she wasn't there to
supervise us. When we returned from our shopping marathon Sarah was up
and alive and could not remember the previous nights mix up in rooms but she
felt horrible and wrote a nice letter explaining things to our neighbours, also
the owner of the hostel found it rather amusing and was able to repeatedly
quote about it with us. Unfortunately though Codi was no better and could not
even keep water down so the owner, an incredibly generous young man, drove us
to the hospital and stayed with us while Codi got some medical attention.
Thankfully it was just food poisoning as we'd assumed but they were able to
help her rehydrate, we were now all four looking in tip top shape. The next day
was another shopping extravaganza! This time Sarah and Codi were able to join.
And we also hit up some amazing food places that did not cause any more
illnesses. In fact we had the best Syrian food I have ever tasted. A touching
place to eat despite the turmoil the country is currently facing. That evening
we got to see a light and water show at one of the many other malls near by and
then in the morning it was time to go. A short but sweet visit with yet more
memorable stories!
Later in the day when Sarah finally emerged from her hangover we went to lunch at a Syrian restaurant!
Best food ever!
The water show!
Four strong again! Codi was mostly all healed
Getting Chai in little India! Mmm I love Chai!
