I view my
year here in Cambodia as a mountain journey, my first six months here being the
uphill climb and I have now officially reached its peek, the only thing left is
to make my way back down the hill. It's smooth sailing from here!
Things a
newcomer of Cambodia may find appealing/highly questionable at the least are...
Buying
gasoline in coke bottles.
Drinking out
of plastic bags rather than cups.
Driving into
the flow of oncoming traffic before merging into the proper lane after making a
left hand turn.
Walking
around with a constant pool of water surrounding your body aka your sweat.
Dogs knowing
how to cross five lanes of traffic without a second glance while I can barely
cross one.
The roof of
vehicles being acceptable seating options.
Five people
on one motto.
No driving
age requirements.
Not to
mention babies flailing about on mottos not strapped in or wearing helmets.
Fifty-cent
beers.
How the men
pull up there shirts to reveal their bellies when they are hot.. As though that
really makes a difference other than hurting my eyes.
The constant
National Anthem playing from street vendors.
Wedding
tents being pitched in the middle of streets.
Eating rice,
rice, and more rice (literally breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
These things I have grown accustomed to over the course of
my journey, and I'm sure I will oddly miss them in future years to come.
